COACHING HIGH SCHOOL AGE ATHLETES

If parents truly believe that winning is everything, then you are really mistaken about what coaching is about. I believe that the high school athlete should first be a parent’s child. Second he (she) should be a student of the classroom, then the game of life, then the actual game whether it is football, basketball, volleyball, track, etc.
I sometimes forget about the classroom importance but not while I was a high school coach, as I never asked a teacher to change a grade. A player was on his own in that respect. Make the grade in the classroom, and after school, make it on the field. Usually the best played on a given day, but only if they were on time in class as well as practice all week and game day. I knew whom I wanted to start but that always depended upon the week’s activities. I usually make up the lineup card just before infield on game day. The players knew who was going to start provided they showed up on time. Coach knew, but only if they showed up on time. Occasionally that was tested and the lineup would change. I probably can count on one hand where that happened. The message got out. You are never too good to sit.
A good coach starts deserving players. He molds them first to be good students and people. A good coach tries to instill fairness, morality, integrity and what it takes to win. Most of this is done by example. I believe that a team that scores the most runs wins. Will I denigrate top pitching, of course not. In baseball – usually the team with the best pitching wins, but not always. I remember winning in late 80s with leading hitter batting .250 and only 1 all leaguer- should have been 2. One coach in particular apologized, since he knew how and why we won. The best pitcher did not get all-league. Almost everybody in the lineup had a wining hit. I also knew that the other team had to score to win. It is tough to do against excellent pitching.
It has been said that I don’t coach to win. That is far from the truth. I try to win every game that I coach. But I first try to develop players of the game. Can I tell the out come of the game before it starts-no. Do I sometimes know what may transpire- yes. But regardless of what I think or see or feel, we will try to win all games.
If you believe that winning is the only thing and that only the best in your mind are on the field at all times, then legion ball may not be for you. I feel that you are as good as your weakest link, and I will do my best to bring weaker players to level of the best players. After all a starting player could get hurt, then what? Give up? I don’t think so. A prepared team prepares for all extenuating circumstances. I also feel that all players deserve the chance in a game (more than one) to prove themselves. Almost any player who tries his best and works hard daily will become a better player. One person in particular comes to mind that would have been cut in most years when he first went out for Jr. Bulls but is now playing at Shasta College. I understand he is a starter this season.
If you think any coach likes cutting a player, think again. If in fact that we have to minimize for the summer time for whatever reason, we will. Red Bluff will usually be out manned due to small number of schools versus Redding or Chico. Corning will also be in the same boat but they can go south to Orland and Willows. Red Bluff used to include Corning, Orland, and Willows. We won way more than we lost. Will we get back to that? Not as long as parents get too involved. It is parents who make it tough on their own children to play to their ability. They expect too much and push so hard, it no longer is fun for the players. The players tend to play better and win more if the parents and coaches let them play.
If I am guilty of pushing too hard, or gripe too much about how a player plays, I am sorry. If my disciplinary actions seem too harsh in your mind, I am sorry; but I believe what I believe. And I believe eventually the cream will always rise to the top
What has transpired in Red Bluff of late with the USSSA team and RB American Legion is stupid. Form the USSSA team for a different reason than trying to bury Legion ball. There is a good side to this and that is that more players will get a chance to play. Will either team win will remain to be seen. I felt that the current Legion team would have been one of the best in a while and probably better next year, until the split. I believe we will be better next year too because we will work hard at learning the game and maybe even some of the 19 year olds may come back from the USSSA club.
Remember players, play as well as possible for the team you are presently wearing a uniform. I know it is tough to separate spring and summer but you must. You are teammates now and must behave accordingly. You are friends now, and I hope forever. Never become enemies. Opponents you may be, but enemies never. You are great kids. Good luck always.

The J.V. team made its cuts on Thursday. Final cuts? I don't know. I will say to the coaches credit, it was very difficult for them to cut any one of those kids and as I understand it, the cuts were made by committee of the entire caoching staff. For you players that were cut, DON'T GIVE UP! Work on your skills, play summer ball and maybe even Fall Ball. There have been players who have been cut in past years that kept working on their skills and eventually made the High School team and some have even gone on to play in college. Everyone develops at different levels, matures at different levels. I know that the J.V. coaches would give you the same advice :)

There is an article in today’s Daily News about the High School raising their facility use fees. I know that for American Legion Baseball they are now charging us $20.00 per hour and $40.00 per hour with lights. What do we get for that kind of fee? I know that we (ALBB) have put thousands of dollars into the baseball field in materials not to mention man-hours. We do all of the field maintenance and repairs ourselves. We purchase materials, i.e. bases, field drags, the PA system, cinder, etc. and make it ALL available for the high school use.

Now the School Board is beginning to sound much like our own state government, don't figure out how to fix it, just charge more taxes to solve the problem. There are many of the youth programs bailing on using the high school facilities, does the School Board not realize that by doubling these fees and losing these youth programs, they are in fact going to be losing revenue?! So instead of getting $5,000 from a program for example, they will get NOTHING! Everyone gets the whole budget crunch thing and I believe that everyone would be willing to accept a reasonable fee increase of 10 - 25%, but to double the fees, that is unreasonable - period! :P

We had tryouts last weekend and I had to make some cuts. Someone has evidently felt I did so politically. I assume that if the individual I cut was good in their mind that he would be good eoough in mine. I am sorry that we do not agree. They may be right and I may have misread that individual, but I made that decision along with some other input. Part of political problem as I understand, is that individual's choice to play elsewhere the last 2 years but that did not come into play.I had to decide if he was the best at a given position. I had to decide as head coach, would he help us if he had to sit? I had to decide if he could help us somewhere else. I had to decide on possible talents I could not see. I made choice after consulting with other coaches. We as coaches did not agree 100%.
I (we) also had to decide upon whether to go forward with 2 teams or 1. We decided on 1. That changes part of the coaching as we (Bulls) will have 4 coaches instead of 3, Mike Weibling, Jason Beeman, Andrew Lish, and myself Jim Bonomini, none of which will be a parent. I try to not have parents as coaches, because no matter how good they are, someone objects to what is happening and it always seems to be their fault. It usually is not.
To players caught in the middle of this-remember it will not be held against you, what your parents say or do. You choose the best you can for you under the circumstances. I do appreciate you being forward and come to me for decisions I made or make, and don't take for granted what you hear elsewhere. I have and will always be truthful to you and to your parents. But will I make everyone happy? That is not my goal and no matter how hard one tries , it won't happen.
The best to all. Bono phone 529-3320. Feel free to call me. Leave a message if no one answers. I will be out of town on Jan 27 and 28th.
